FAQ'S

What is the Episcopal Church?

Great question! So great, we’ve got a page dedicated to it. Check it out here!

 About All Saints'

Do I have to be Episcopalian to be a member of All Saints’?

NO! Anyone can be a member of our parish. We ask for at least one of three things:

  1. Regular attendance at worship (1-2 times per month)

  2. Participation in one or more of our ministries (see our ministries page for details)

  3. Financial giving

If you’re ready to call All Saints’ your church home, we’re ready to have you! Fill out a membership form, and you’re done.

How can I get involved—and do I need to attend services to do that?

We’d love for you to get involved, no matter how long you’ve been connected—whether it’s your first Sunday, hundredth Sunday, or you’ve never been to a service at all. There are opportunities to help with worship, serve in outreach, care for creation, join smaller side ministries, participate in events, and more. If you're passionate about building community or supporting others, there’s a place for you here. Your presence and your gifts matter—however and wherever you choose to show up.

What do you offer for children and youth?
Children and youth are at the heart of our church community. We have a dedicated Children’s Minister who knows and supports each child, teen, and family individually. Our goal is to create a church where all generations grow together in faith—so much so that it’s often hard to say whether something is “just for adults” or “just for kids.” We intentionally design our life together to be accessible and meaningful for everyone.

At the same time, we know that kids sometimes need space to just be kids. On Sundays, we offer dedicated time at 9:00 a.m. for children and youth to gather in age-appropriate groups, and during the 10:15 service we offer Children’s Chapel—a creative, kid-friendly time of prayer and storytelling. Throughout the year, we also host seasonal events and service opportunities where young people can play, lead, learn, and grow in their own ways.

Is there a nursery or childcare available?
We don’t currently have an open nursery, but we’re ready to reopen it as soon as there’s a need. In the meantime, children of all ages are welcome in worship or in Children’s Chapel during the 10:15 service. We’re always happy to work with families to support what helps them feel most at home.

Worship and Practices

What is your worship service like?
Our worship is informal but sacred—rooted in tradition, yet relaxed and welcoming. We follow the rhythm of Episcopal liturgy, with Scripture, prayer, music, and Communion at the center. We make room for questions, quiet moments, and even a few mistakes, knowing that God is always the focus. Whether you're new to church or a lifelong Episcopalian, you're welcome just as you are.

What is the Book of Common Prayer?
The Book of Common Prayer is the worship book we use to guide our services. It includes prayers, Scripture readings, and liturgies that have shaped Episcopal worship for centuries. While the words may be ancient, they come alive in our shared prayer and community life.

Can I take Communion at your church?
Yes—all baptized Christians, of any age or denomination, are invited to receive Communion. If you're not baptized but feel drawn to receive, our rector would be honored to have a conversation with you about it. You are welcome at God's table.

Are children included in worship?
Absolutely. We welcome every person—of every age—in every part of worship. Children are not only included; they are cherished. During our 10:15 service, we also offer Children’s Church as an optional space for kids who’d enjoy age-appropriate stories, prayer, and activities.

Community Engagement

What is your church’s stance on social issues?
All Saints’ seeks to follow Jesus in all areas of life—including the public and social spheres. We are political in the same way Jesus was: calling people of every walk of life into a relationship with God that is lived out in community, with concern for justice, mercy, and the common good. We are not partisan, and we do not align with political parties. Instead, we aim to create a space where people can listen, speak, and grow in faith together—across political, social, and personal differences.

Are LGBTQ+ people welcome?
Yes—wholeheartedly. LGBTQ+ people are welcome, beloved, and affirmed in the full life of our church. So are conservatives, liberals, independents, agnostics, lifelong believers, seekers, and skeptics. We believe every person is made in God’s image and deeply cherished, and we strive to reflect that in how we worship, serve, and walk together.

How does your church engage with the wider community?
We believe that faith calls us beyond our walls. Our ministries include a strong commitment to creation care and a growing network of outreach partnerships throughout Virginia Beach. We support food security, housing efforts, and community support services, always looking for ways to walk alongside our neighbors with love and respect. We see these efforts not as extras, but as central to following Jesus.

What do you  believe about the Bible?
We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, telling the story of God’s love from creation to today. Episcopalians read Scripture in community, with curiosity and care. We take the Bible seriously, but not always literally—seeking its truth through the lenses of tradition and reason. It’s a living text that invites us into a lifelong conversation with God.
